Making a difference (investigation criterion A)

A) Criterion A part 1

This project is about designing gate or fences in ger districts. The problem with the gates now is that they drag in the ground it makes hard to open the gate. This means we need to lift the door to open the gate. A gate is not supposed drag on the ground. It needs to light but strong so it won’t break easily. Problem of the fences are weak and the cost is expensive. They should be cheap and strong. I will design their gate. If I do this project well, I can help other poor people who live in ger districts by making their life more comfortable and improve their poor technology to a bit better technology. I want to know how I can help other people with my technology skills.

I visited ger district twice. During my first visit, on September 30, I just walking and look around. When I look around I saw gers, fences, garbage dumps, road that were not flat and well (water station). I heard live in a ger district is a common way to live in Mongolia. Ger districts are growing very fast, because there are no jobs in the countryside. About 1.5 million people live in Ulaanbaatar and more than 800,000 people live in ger districts. It’s over 50% of people who live in Ulaanbaatar. Well is open from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00 in the summer and from10:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00 in the winter. Everybody who lives in a ger district buys water from a well every day when they need water. The roads are not good and the water bottles are heavy, so getting water form well is hard work, so they live without running water. They buy water from well 1 per 1L of water. This water contains a heavy metal and fecal matter. They have small walls to protect from erosion. In winter they need to heat their ger so they burn anything they can. I think live in a ger district of Ulaanbaatar is hard to live. During my second visit, on October 7, I dug holes for a gate post and outhouse. In the ground there were almost all rocks. So it’s hard to dig.

The condition of the technology is poor. If they have enough money to build fences and gates, they can have better technology. But from now Gates and fences also could be design better.

B) Criterion A part 2

I want to design better gate. My gate will not drag on the ground. The big gate will have a 2 doors each door will have 3 big string hinges. There will also be 2 wires to hold the gate. The wires are hanged from the gate post. Wires help to not drag on the gate. The small gate for people will have 3 big strong hinges. The gate will be mad of two Sheets of iron and Styrofoam. The Styrofoam will be between two sheets of iron. The sheets of iron will help the gate to be stronger. The Styrofoam makes the gate thicker and stronger. Styrofoam is light so it will not affect much to weight of the gate. If the gate’s weight is light, it will easy to open and easy to hold not drag on the ground.
